Unique Jazz Talent Jon Seiger Leads Jazz & Film

Series Tribute to Louis Armstrong & Roy Eldridge

A remarkable musician offers what promises to be a unique and entertaining tribute to two jazz legends in the third installment of this year’s Jazz & Film Series in Maplewood - “Pops and Little Jazz: A Tribute to Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge,” which will be held on Friday October 20, 2006, at 8 P.M. at the Burgdorff Cultural Center.

This salute to these jazz trumpet legends in film and live performance will feature  Jon Seiger, a trumpeter and vocalist who has overcome a serious hearing loss to become a musician and entertainer of the first rank.  Seiger, born and bred in New York City, developed a passion for music as a teenager.  Unlike his peers who were trying to become the next Mick Jagger, Jon was spending his time at a jazz club called Jimmy Ryan’s-the last of the classic 52nd Street joints.  Jon was befriended by none other than Little Jazz himself, Roy Eldridge, who held forth nightly at the club during the mid-1970’s.  Jon would often sit in on trumpet, with Roy’s encouragement, as well as the support of the other veteran musicians on the bandstand (many of whom Jon would work with years later).

To further his musical education, Jon attended the august New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.  In that bastion of classical music and modern jazz, he was able to cut a niche as a true practioner of swing music, gigging around Boston as a trumpeter, singer and pianist while pursuing his studies.  He developed an uncanny ability to sing and play like Louis Armstrong.  Arvell Shaw, Armstrong’s long time bassist, remarked that Jon sounded closest to “Satchmo” of anybody he'd ever heard.

As co-leader of a swing/jump band, The Hi-Tops, Jon and his mates moved to New York in the mid-80’s, garnering much acclaim along the way. He continued to work steadily as a triple threat musician, touring throughout the country and performing in the New York area.  By the time swing music was “rediscovered” by the public and other musicians in the 90’s, Jon stood out as the real thing, a true interpreter of great American Music.

Health problems and a significant hearing loss threatened Jon’s livelihood in the late 90’s, but with the help of a Cochlear implant and a lot of courage, Jon was able to resume his life as a working musician. Featured recently at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, he has also toured throughout the US, Canada, South America, and the Caribbean, bringing joy to audiences of all stripes.

"It’s interesting enough that Seiger is a white guy who sings in a traditional black jazz style; it’s astonishing that he's also a deaf man making a living in the world of sound,” remarks The Democrat and Chronicle (Rochester, NY). The newspaper also notes that "Seiger’s ton-of-gravel vocals are as close to Louis Armstrong as we're ever likely to hear on any stage."

Jon Seiger, along with his “Hot Five,”  offers a loving tribute to Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge in this not-to-be-missed special event.

“Jazz & Film” is a series consisting of live music and film clips, with the purpose of entertaining and educating about a certain jazz genre. Jazz & Film is sponsored by Maplewood Community Music in cooperation with the Maplewood Memorial Library.

The first Jazz & Film event this year was held Friday February 10 at 1978 Maplewood Art Center on Springfield Ave. A tribute to legendary jazz vocalists, it featured the vocal talents of New York City-based Richard Lanham and quartet plus film clips of Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Nat “King” Cole, and others. Maplewood Memorial Library hosted the second of the three performances on Friday April 21 – blues piano with local pianist and educator Tricia Woods and her trio; as part of its sponsorship, the library donated funds to buy all the DVDs/videos used in the series to keep in its library collection.

Jazz & Film is sponsored Maplewood Community Music (www.maplewoodcommunitymusic.org) - Jim Buchanan, Musical Director; Susan Dillon, Administration. Maplewood Community Music includes a community concert band, open to all adults of all musical abilities. The organization includes a 20-piece swing band (“Swing Town”), Dixieland band (“Jackson Square”), and trombone quartet (“Bones Unlimited”); it also runs an instrumental music camp for children each summer. Maplewood Community Music is run under the auspices of Maplewood Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs, Director - Roger Brauchli. For more information on the camp or Maplewood Community Music, contact Susan Dillon at 973/477-4229.

The Louis Armstrong/Roy Eldridge tribute, held in the Burgdorff Cultural Center at 10 Durand Rd. Maplewood, is the kickoff to Maplewood’s annual Jazz Weekend
